A densely populated area in the city of Zaragoza, Delicias has a general lack of green space and symbolic landmark places. In the 1990’s the neighborhood residents’ association (Asociación de Vecinos de Delicias “Manuel Viola”) gathered support, including from the City of Zaragoza, to have a small unsightly corner vacant lot revitalized into a thriving hanging garden. The leisure and educational community gathering space also provides much needed vegetation.

Designed by Sicilia y Asociados Arquitectura and Jardinería Vela, the award winning Plaza Delicias (Delicias Square) Vertical Garden has flourished in the tight urban space. A vertical garden of 500 linear metres of different heights with various accesses and platforms was created offering a multitude of activities. Using 84 different plant species, over 800 m2 of landscaping elements were incorporated, in addition to 530 m2 of plants located at the Plaza Delicias street level. Rising to a height over 14.40 metres, the routes crisscross the plaza’s space as if they were tree branches sprouting out from the trunk, creating the symbolic neighborhood tree. Unique art has been incorporated within a striking vertical tower, and the entire constructed unit is presented as a unique whole interrelating architecture with naturalization.
