Position Wanted in plant selection and biodiversity/performance evaluation for green roof projects

Job Wanted Posting:  February 25, 2008
Availability:
May 2008
Relocation:  Yes

Leyla Cabugos says, "My focus has been designing experiments to evaluate native species for low-maintenance rooftop plantings in Hawai`i, USA. I will attain a Master's in Science degree in botany, and become available for employment in May, 2008.

Modern green roof designs address an ever-increasing variety of conditions and performance goals, including habitat creation, irrigation with reclaimed water and food production, and integration with other technologies, such as building-scale power generation. I am interested in consulting in plant selection and biodiversity/performance evaluation for green roof projects with diverse goals, drawing from my background in botany and horticultural restoration, my familiarity with current green roof research, and my ability to design and conduct research trials as needed.

I can apply my training in ethnobotany to identify plant resources that reflect the cultural influences of the site and/or its users. Imagine a themed garden dedicated to cooking, musical references, family history or medicinal uses! I can provide meaningful ideas for the intensive garden, along with creative interpretive material.

I have a deep interest in urban agriculture, and would love to develop projects that connect urban waste streams with food production and education.

My botanical familiarity is based California, Hawai`i, Australia, south India and the Philippines, but I would be a quick study in other regions.

The other half of my work is green roof advocacy. From providing input on municipal incentives bills to assisting in a feasibility study for the Hawai`i State Legislature, and with volunteer recruitment and campus outreach to administrators, departments, students, military and industry professionals, I have been working to introduce the practice of green roofing to Hawaiian communities. I would like to develop this work into a career, in Hawai`i or elsewhere.

I thrive on variety and challenges, and have strong writing and public presentation skills. Let's talk about how I can contribute to your company or organization, and work together towards greener cities!"

Publisher's Note:  See Leyla's research from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa Green Roof Experiment project profile in The Greenroof Projects Database, and download Leyla Cabugos' Curriculum Vitae with contact information here.

Irucka says, "I am an active member and serve as the webmaster of the EWRI/ASCE Task Force on Sustainable Water Pollution Engineering -- http://www.sustainabledesign360.org or http://www.sustainable-water-pollution-engineering.org/index.html.

I researched many effective sustainable design solutions that can be used to solve water and wastewater issues, including green roofs, green swales, bioretention/bioinfiltration facilities (rain gardens), etc.

As a Project Engineer with the Rutherford County government for the last two years, I managed the daily operations of a Class III/IV landfill (construction/demolition, farming, landscaping, and land clearing wastes) and the post-closure operations of a Class I landfill (commercial, domestic, institutional, and municipal solid wastes) and supervised five employees.

Looking for employment in Green Building with engineers, architects, landscape architects and planners
Job Wanted Posting:  October 18, 2006

Stephen Hannan recently graduated as a Civil Engineer, and is looking to work with architects, landscape architects and planners, and do not necessarily limit his job search to engineering.  Primarily he would like to be involved in Green building design, alternative energy sources, and sustainability.

During his undergraduate coursework Stephan says, "I constantly was looking for ways to design green, reduce energy usage, and recycle energy and products.  This helped my classmates and professors to think green as well.  Two professors who liked my enthusiasm and innovative thought process allowed my to pursue green design through research under them.  One concept was solely my idea and involved retrofitting a building on campus using passive and active solar, green roof addition, and other sustainable devices.

I am constantly looking for new products, designs, and ideas that people have come up with in green building in order to stay on top of the fast paced market.  I am looking for jobs near Seattle WA.  I enjoy the outdoors and green movement here."
