The Atlanta Botanical Garden opened its Edible Garden Green Wall and Outdoor Kitchen on May 1, 2010 showcasing the farm-to-table concept of cultivating and consuming fresh local and sustainably-grown food. Part of the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Green Expansion Plan completed in 2010, the $2 million project not only returned the former abandoned one acre asphalt parking lot to green space but also shows how fruits and vegetables make beautiful landscape plants. A wide variety of herbs, about 2,000 in total, is planted in the vertical garden and include sage, dianthus, dwarf, phlox, and boxwoods.
“The Garden includes an open-air demonstration kitchen and terrace to host various classes, visitor relaxation, and rental events to generate on-site revenue. The project also included reworking back-of-the-house service and support spaces and circulation,” (Tres Fromme Design).
The design team “emphasized the vertical gardening concept and a series of three “crop circles,” or garden rooms each with its own personality – brimming in between with colorful row crops of vegetables. From the Great Lawn’s Vine Arbor, visitors first enter an orchard of crabapple trees complemented by grasses, perennials and bulbs. Turning a corner, they will find themselves surrounded by a Vegetable Amphitheatre, patterned with 1,000 square feet of vegetables and espaliered fruit trees rising above it. Next, they are greeted with a feast for the eyes – a 55 foot long herb wall,” (ABG press release, see below).
Saul Nurseries worked together closely with the designers to settle on a plant pallet that would be easy to maintain, thrive in the Atlanta climate, and be a stunning visual statement. Completed in April, 2010, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens Edible Garden Green Wall measures 52’L x 8’H. The Tournesol Siteworks modules were grown for two months before installation in one of Saul Nurseries’ greenhouses.
