The Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre is a public-private partnership between the member companies of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the City of Toronto, the Toronto Atmospheric Fund and the Canadian Federal government. The Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre boasts a 5,000 square foot extensive greenroof, planted in the spring of 2002. The greenroof is set atop a steel deck gymnasium, and utilizes Soprema’s Sopranature? and the Garland Company’s GreenShieldTM greenroof components.

A second site is located at the Toronto City Hall Demonstration Project, and the project will be modeled for Toronto’s urban heat island effect. The City of Toronto is conducting stormwater quantity and quality research, and energy savings and air quality instrumentation, monitoring, and analysis is lead by Canada’s National Resource Council’s Institute for Research in Construction. Factors such as the temperature and heat flow across the greenroof and the soil moisture content will be measured and compared to a conventional roof surface. Plant function and survival will also be studied.
