Aquaquest – The Marilyn Blusson Learning Centre – opened in November 2006. The Vancouver Aquarium and Mayor Gregor Robertson unveiled the Aquarium?s LEED Gold and ISO 14001 certifications in time for Earth Day 2009. Aquaquest ? the Marilyn Blusson Learning Centre ? through its innovative building design and management practices resulted in the Aquarium being the first worldwide to achieve both certifications. Some of its environmentally sustainable features include low-flush toilets, a rainwater harvesting system, an efficient system of pipes that heat and cool the building, and a living green wall of native plants, which measures 10 by 50 feet (3 meters by 15.2 meters). The 7,000 plants are mostly native species of fern, bleedingheart, huckleberry and wintergreen.Sharp & Diamond Landscape Architecture Inc. is the designer of the site and for the concept for the wall, as well as planting layout. The green wall installation is enhanced with 75 square feet (3 trees and groundcovers) of intensive green roof planters. The living wall is nourished by rainwater collected off the roof, stored in an underground cistern and fed through a drip irrigation system.

The Vancouver Aquarium, located in world famous Stanley Park, has more than 70,000 fascinating creatures to explore from the Artic to the Amazon. The 52,000 square foot ?green? Aquaquest building is home to three new classrooms as well as the new Canaccord Capital Exploration Gallery, which features interactive exhibits, a Windows on Research area, an enhanced Clownfish Cove play learning area for young children, a theatre, the environmental newsroom, and administrative spaces.
