O & H, the developers of The Heart – a residential and retail project – sought waterproofing and green roofing systems from Alumasc as they were confident that the company could provide all the structural elements to create the watertight platform area and that they had the landscaping knowhow to ensure its long term survival.This new concept in urban living comprises a significant retail development at ground floor level above which a 4000m2 secret garden was created for the enjoyment of the residents of The Heart?s 379 apartments in January, 2008.

Hydrotech Structural Waterproofing (as known in the UK) or Hydrotech Monolithic Membrane 6125? (better known in North America), designed to last for the lifetime of the building, was chosen on account of its track record of high performance and its durability when combined with green roof constructions. The ZinCo green roof was particularly complex due to the requirement for both intensive and extensive planting; intensive green roof elements complement the scheme?s overall circular design whilst elaborate planters, containing a variety of leafy plug plants and mature trees, were constructed and made watertight to sit alongside the communal seating areas and walkways.
