The ground and first floor of the new WakeMed Patient Tower “includes new main entrances into the hospital, and the tower will feature 102 total beds. The second floor has 20 new ICU rooms, and the third and fourth floor houses the remaining beds. Also, located on the fourth floor is the new Children?s Hospital, which is the first children?s hospital in Wake County. In addition, a new parking deck connects to the patient tower by a new pedestrian bridge over the loop road. New courtyard space provides additional outdoor space for seating. A green roof is also located on the canopy over the patient drop-off area,” (Brasfield & Gorrie).

Living Roofs Inc. consulted on the design and installed the green roof on the entrance canopy for the new WakeMed Patient Tower. For the 2,300 square foot extensive green roof, a thin, lightweight, pre-vegetated system was chosen to keep additional structural loads to a minimum. Completed in December, 2009, the roof is highly visible from patient rooms and hallways.
