Today we have the pleasure to air Steve Ritz’s PowerPoint presentation “The Green Bronx Machine” from our inaugural 2011 Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit on greenroofs.tv and our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube.
I’m sure many of you know already of the excellent work of Bronx educator Steve Ritz – we’ve written about him several times already when he spoke at TEDxManhattan last January with “Changing the Way We Eat” where there’s a link to the TED talk) at the Times Center in New York City and Caroline Menetre’s GLT in NYC: A Weekend of Training, Education, & Fun blog post of January, 2011.
As founder of the Green Bronx Machine, Steve’s presentation gives an overview of some of the current issues in the Bronx as well as the positive effects of the Green Bronx Machine. Did you know the very young organization has already grown over 25,000 pounds of organic vegetables, later sold to local markets? Read more in the May 10, 2012 editorial Growing healthy jobs, food and the environment by Sterling Roberson, Vice-President of CTE for United Federation of Teachers.
Here is some more recent press on Steve Ritz and his work:
Green Bronx Machine: Growing Our Way Into a New Economy, Harvesting Hope, and Cultivating Minds in Edible Schoolyard of May 9, 2012;
Teacher’s green machine tackles Bronx poverty in NY METRO NEWS of April 20-22, 2012;
Greening the Curriculum in Principal Leadership – Green Schools (page 20) under “Growing Green: Discovery High School, Bronx, NY” of December 2011.
Originally slated to precede the “Greenroofs & Walls for Educational & Social Equity in the Bronx” Panel Session that we showed earlier with New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., (Moderator) Robert Bieder, Jon Beuttler, Jess Dannhauser, Javier Lopez and Steve Ritz, the “The Green Bronx Machine” PowerPoint Presentation had to be cut from that video due to time restraints – as it was, we had to edit that excellent panel session down to an already long – but well worth it – 59:28!
During the live Virtual Summit 2011 and 30-day archives, attendees could see the PowerPoint Presentation in its entirety in the On Demand Auditorium.
It’s a great, uplifting message of leadership and backgrounder on the work of former South Bronx teacher Steve Ritz and others in the community!
If you haven’t seen the passionate “Greenroofs & Walls for Educational & Social Equity in the Bronx” Panel Session yet, please do – there is a lot of great interaction and information here among this very distinguished group of New Yorkers. Just click above.
By the way, Steve’s contact email address shown in the PowerPoint has changed to: snl978@aol.com.
