– Hello, I’m Anjuli Velázquez and welcome to “This Week in Review” for July 13th, 2012 on GreenroofsTV.
– Our project of the week is the Indianapolis Children’s Museum Green Roof built in 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana. In celebration of Earth Week 2010 the Children’s Museum installed a GreenGrid green roof system that is now a permanent colorful learning exhibit for all who visit. The green roof is viewable from the approximately 60-foot-wide Sunburst Window, located on the Mezzanine level of the Sunburst Atrium. There is an educational kiosk along the window that provides children with information on what a green roof is and how it benefits the environment. The museum’s green roof compliments the existing expansive rain garden below.
With approximately 1 million visitors each year, this green roof provides excellent educational outreach for sustainable building products and best management practices. Five color contrasting plant mixes where used creating Red, Orange-Yellow, Blue-Purple, Light Green and Dark Green zones. A lightweight 100% recycled rubber “faux” flagstone paver was used around the walkway, flush and intermixed with the vegetation. The G3 GreenGrid module was used and each plant mix featured at least 50% evergreen Sedum varieties.

– Gordon Severson of Kaaltv.com talks about “Winona State University House Going Green.” Winona State University has been establishing itself as not only one of the greenest and most sustainable colleges in Minnesota but also in the U.S. This week, construction crews were making last minute additions to the Theme House. Interim President Connie Gores says, “It truly represents the students being able to live what they learn,” and that it “lives our mission which is about a community of learners improving our world. I think this truly is the embodiment of that.”
The Theme House includes bricks on the driveway that collect rainwater, preventing stormwater runoff that would otherwise flow into the river, energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, solar panels and a greenroof. Construction should be done by the end of July and students can move in this September.
– Max Salsbury of 24Dash.com says, “Beetles return to Abbey Road.” Over 40 years ago, The Beatles recorded their “Abbey Road” album, and now a different kind of beetle is calling Abbey Road home. Dor, ground and sexton beetles have moved into the Abbey housing greenroof in North London.
“The Hive” building is home to beetles, moths, butterflies, spiders and wildflowers. The roof has log piles and stones so that bugs can bask and burrow. Nectar and pollen rich wildflowers like bird’s foot trefoil and viper’s bugloss attract pollinators such as bees; and the plot is just a short way from Abbey Road studios where The Beatles made their last recorded album. Camden Council Cabinet member for sustainability, Councillor Phil Jones, said, “This project shows the benefits that re-creating habitats for wildlife in urban areas can bring,” and that “this is a wonderful project that protects endangered species, improves biodiversity and can be enjoyed by the whole community.”
