Greenroofs.com Project of the Week: 1/20/14
WFYI Indianapolis
Indianapolis, IN, USA
6,000 sq. ft Greenroof
Project Description & Details
WFYI plays a crucial role in the central Indiana community as the state’s flagship PBS and NPR member television and radio station. Marking the culmination of a plan the organization conceived more than five years ago, WFYI installed one of Indianapolis’ largest greenroofs at its headquarters last spring, 2013 thanks in part to a grant from Lilly Endowment. When WFYI’s television studios were constructed in 2008, as a cost-saving addition to the existing facility, the new wing was designed to one day house a greenroof.
Before the greenroof was installed, the audio equipment in the recording studio was picking up the sound of rain hitting the roof. Now, the sound is not audible in the studio and storms have not stopped production. Omni Ecosystems installed their ultra-lightweight 5”-deep Infinity Growing Media™, and further advantage for sound insulation came from the tall plant canopy provided from Omni Ecosystems’ Meadow & Butterfly Mix systems. Echinacea, Catmint, Daylily, Aster, Sedum Autumn Joy, Buckwheat, dill, cosmos now intermingle with vegetables including radishes and carrots (and the occasional plastic fox).
