Greenroofs.com Project of the Week: 5/11/15
Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) Green Wall
Rochester, NY, USA
320 sf. Greenwall
Project Description & Details
The LEED® Platinum certified Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) is a multidisciplinary academic unit at the Rochester Institute of Technology whose mission is to undertake world-class education and research programs in sustainability with major foci on sustainable production, sustainable energy, sustainable mobility and ecologically friendly information technology systems. Designed by FXFOWLE in collaboration with SWBR and LeChase Construction Company, the new world-class building is a living laboratory which houses specialized research labs, student work areas, classrooms, and office suites.
One very distinctive feature is the beautiful and massive modular green wall by Green Living Technologies International. Pregrown by Plant Designs, it spans 8 feet wide and 40 feet tall near the building’s west entrance, containing 1,920 plants that contribute to air quality as well as aesthetics. The living wall is a focal point for the world class building and provides a breathtaking 4-story tapestry of texture and color that can naturally remove harmful toxins, carcinogens, and volatile organic compounds throughout the entire Galleria. Additional sustainable features of GIS include incorporating transparent infrastructure, a smart microgrid, a 144 solar panel array, vertical wind turbines, a 3,300 sf greenroof, a 1,700 gallon water storage cistern used to flush the toilets, a geothermal system, and a 400 kW fuel-cell power source.
