Macy’s Corporate Headquarters Habitat Roof
Cincinnati, OH, USA
16,000 sf. Greenroof
Project of the Week Mini Description & Details
The U.S.’s largest department store retailer, Macy’s was established in 1858 and is renowned for its annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, held in New York City since 1924. Macy’s Corporate Headquarters sits in the heart of downtown Cincinnati’s urban core and the company strives for green department stores across the nation with sustainable renovations which are built to consume less energy whenever possible. When part of corporate headquarters needed renovation, an environmentally friendly option only made sense – the new Macy’s Habitat Green Roof is located on the 8th floor patio outside of the cafeteria. The American Hydrotech assembly will be used by its employees including the 1,000 sf “Go Green” garden where associates will plant vegetables and herbs which the chef will use in the cafeteria.
Designed by Rose Seeger of Green City Resources, specific selection of plant material for butterflies and pollinators was carefully planned along with seasonal progression of bloom to ensure there would be nectar and habitat all season. Many drought tolerant and native varieties were used to provide some type of seed, nectar, or cover for birds, bees and butterflies. Three large bubble boulders provide a water source for the habitat, also enjoyed by employees. Since Ohio is on the Monarch migration route, the Habitat Roof is a registered Monarch Waystation, providing nectar for adults and host plants for larvae. The green roof is also a registered Wildlife Habitat; pipes, logs, rocks and a mason bee house provide cover and encourage nesting of urban wildlife. A Cooper’s Hawk trapped in the parking garage was released onto the roof, and has been sighted back on occasion. The Macy’s Corporate Headquarters Habitat Roof is the first of its kind in downtown Cincinnati and Macy’s hopes to encourage more businesses and their employees to make small oases of habitat.
