CitiesAlive 2018
Susannah C. Drake of DLANDstudio is a keynote at CitiesAlive 2018 in New York from September 24-28.
Brought to you by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the theme of the event is Green Infrastructure: Designing the Future of Resilience. CitiesAlive 2018 will explore topics like flood management, biodiversity, biophilic design, urban agriculture, vertical forests, coastal greening, green finance, new performance metrics, advancements in green infrastructure policy and regulations and new research findings.
Susannah Drake stands out in the design industry as a forward thinker and leader in urban design. With professional design qualifications in both Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Susannah amalgamates ecology, infrastructure and aesthetically pleasing designs in every project she works on. In 2005, Susannah founded DLANDstudio, a multidisciplinary firm made up of scientists, urban designers, graphic designers, architects and landscape architects based in Brooklyn, NY.
The award-winning and internationally recognized firm designs multifunctional landscape systems to address urban challenges and create more resilient spaces.
DLANDstudio recently designed an open space unlike any other, the Gowanus Canal Sponge Park in New York. Bordered by industrial buildings and residential neighborhoods, the Gowanus canal has accumulated pollution and toxins over the past few decades. DLANDstudio’s master plan for the canal will connect public and private lands, include recreational spaces running the length of the canal and connective stitching between land and water. The revitalization of the canal is especially impressive as it has been designed to be a working landscape that will continue to improve the environment of the canal over time.
Another notable project of DLANDstudio is a linear park planned for Queens. The 60-year old abandoned Rockaway Long Island Railroad (LIRR) was the center of debate for a number of years. The project, similar to the High Line, presents an opportunity for outdoor classrooms for neighboring schools and the potential for economic growth. It will also reduce car dependency in the area, with more than 100,000 people living within a 10-minute walk of the QueensWay. DLANDstudio will bring its multidisciplinary approach to create a landscape that fosters community engagement and is ecologically productive.
