Top 10 Hot List, 10 Categories, 10 Week Countdown
As promised, this is installation number one in a 10-part series counting down my yearly “Greenroofs.com Top 10 List of Hot Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design” by category.
We inaugurated the “Top 10 Hot List” in 2007, and 2018 is packed with some very cool, awesome, and stunning projects located across six continents.
I presented my fast-paced and always fun whirlwind tour across the world of living architecture in New York a couple of weeks ago at 2018 CitiesAlive. In order to try and keep to my 30-minute maximum presentation time, I removed several projects and slides, but I’m going to show them all here in this series.
Are you ready to be dazzled and inspired by some of the latest and greatest living architecture projects from across the global greenroof and greenwall industry?
Before We Begin…
After I introduce myself and speak a little about Greenroofs.com to my audiences, I always start with a couple of projects, which for some reason or another, just couldn’t quite make it into the Top 10 this year…
“The Green Brain” in Melbourne, Australia on Storey Hall @ RMIT University is a greenroof of sorts. But it’s made of a glass fiber composite, not very organic…
Is it whimsical? Sure.
And I’ll bet it’s easy to maintain, too. But if you ask me, it looks more like it’s been slimed!
In fact, the students at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology understandably refer to it as the “Green Snot!”
Also Not on “The List”:
Could Robotics Be the Future of Modular Greenroof Systems? Imagine a vegetated module feeling like it had been located in a too shady spot, or too sunny for that matter…
Well, it’s no problem if you can move around a bit, right? And, it’ll even play with you and dance a jig when it’s happy!
Designed by Tianqi Sun, yes it’s a good robot, but could it be a good greenroof? Hmmmn… I know being mobile is a fantastic modular attribute, but come on!
Can you say The Runaway Greenroof?
Back to the Real Thing
Now, without further ado, let’s get started.
2018 Top 10 Hot List Category #10: Client Specific ‘Boutique’ Greenroofs & Greenwalls
Haven Kiers, my co-collaborator for the first 10 years of compiling our “Top 10 List of Hot Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design,” and I created this perennial category to house those projects with unique drivers that were just too special to be confined to one definition:
Prada HQ
A garden in a factory? What a lovely sustainably designed corporate campus!
Paris Gare du Nord
From squalor pit to rooftop sporting complex!
Chulalongkorn Centennial Park
This stormwater park puffs out when needed – a monkey’s cheeks, indeed!
Tropicalia
Greenwalls inside and out, not to mention a butt load of gorgeous indoor greening full of biodiversity!
Skool4Kidz Campus @ Sengkang Riverside Park
As Pink might ask, Too school for cool? I think not! See the Skool4Kidz Campus @ Sengkang Riverside Park Project Profile in the Greenroofs.com Projects Database.
