“We will work with the Victorian Government to create a demonstration green roof in the central city and increase the quality of green roofs and vertical greening across the municipality. There are currently around 40 green roofs in the municipality,”
Environment Portfolio Chair Clr Cathy Oke
Melbourne Skyfarm is a collaboration between 3 Melbourne based sustainability companies, to transform a 2000 square metre rooftop car park into an urban farm and environmental oasis in the heart of the city. When complete, visitors will be able to tour the working farm, visit the orchard, sample rooftop honey, dine at the sustainable café, have a drink on the deck, hire unique event spaces, attend classes at the environmental education centre or enjoy the children’s playground. The venue is expected to open in late 2020.
Melbourne Skyfarm will showcase advanced sustainability features on-site, demonstrating and educating students about a range of best practice initiatives including passive solar design, renewable energy, urban greening, zero emissions buildings, carbon neutral transport, zero waste living, urban farming, rainwater harvesting, closed loop cities and urban biodiversity.
The approval comes after council last week injected $1.9 million to implement the first year of its Green Our City Strategic Action Plan.
