Shell Petrol Station @ Tampines Avenue 2
Singapore
592 sf. Greenwalls
Greenroofs.com Featured Project June 17, 2019
No stranger to green living and green architecture, it’s not surprising to find lush living walls just about everywhere you go in Singapore.
But it is refreshing to see them being installed across the island country at filling stations, in this case at Shell.
Excerpt from Project Profile:
As the first of a series of planned upgrades to 57 Shell stations across Singapore, the Tampines Avenue 2 Shell Petrol Station acts as a testing ground of new sustainability features and facilities. Designed as a “mobility oasis,” it was built to enhance community convenience and connectivity.
It marks the launch of a Shell-owned convenience store and the collaboration with strategic partners such as McDonald’s to initiate the island’s first 24 hour drive-thru in a service station. Improving energy and water efficiency in day-to-day operations, solar tubing in the station canopy aids in reducing electricity, while motion detectors ensure that lighting is only activated when necessary.
And boasting the greatest visual impact, four panels of Elmich Green Walls totaling 55 m2 were established across the station. Verdant plants give the station a welcoming green façade while simultaneously helping to reduce ambient heat and airborne pollutants. A rainwater harvesting system, projected to save more than a million litres of water per year, helps to irrigate the plants on the green walls as well as to flush the toilets.
Elmich’s VersiWall® GP green wall products include approximately 100 Proprietary Mounting Panels installed onto 4 different walls of varying sizes across the station, covering a total area of 592 square feet. About 1300 VGP Trays were connected to the irrigation system which uses harvested rainwater, allowing for low maintenance care of the living wall system.
The trays were planted with 3 varieties of shade loving plants: Philodendron ‘Gold’, Dracaena reflex, and Epipremnum aureum (Devil’s Ivy).
The varying shades of green on the plants create a layered look that brings an added dimension of depth to the walls.
Shell Tampines Avenue 2 is the first Shell station in Singapore to feature distinctive finishing touches in both its exteriors and interiors, especially with its refreshing green walls, offering an oasis from the bustle of the roads and helping customers “Go Well.”
