Grey to Green: DC Metro excited to welcome two fantastic keynotes to present in the Opening Plenary on October 29th
Katharine Burgess, the Vice President of Resilience at the Urban Land Institute, will discuss the impact extreme heat will have on buildings and the real estate industry.
As co-author of the recent report Scorched: Extreme Heat and Real Estate, Ms. Burgess looks at the economic impact of extreme heat such as increased health care costs from respiratory and heat-related illness and lost productivity.
Dr. William Hooke is the Associate Executive Director and Senior Policy Fellow at the American Meteorological Society.
Educated as an atmospheric scientist, he has published widely on atmospheric wave dynamics, remote sensing, and natural hazards science and policy. Dr. Hooke is a thought leader and the author of the book Living on the Real World: How Thinking and Acting Like Meteorologists Will Help Save the Planet. As part of the keynote address, Dr. Hooke will discuss the relationship between policy and climate adaption in cities.
Despite the challenges both Ms. Burgess and Dr. Hooke will explore how green roofs, green walls, biophilic design, urban parks and trees and rain gardens and policy can alleviate the stresses of extreme weather on human and environmental health.
