Now in our fourteenth year, Greenroofs.com Publisher Linda Velazquez announces the “2020 Top 10 List of Hot RESILIENT Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design.”

We’ve had an unprecedented and super challenging year, on many fronts. And on a truly global scale. Potentially, the ever-evolving COVID-19 pandemic could be the most serious health and economic threat of our lifetime.

Resilience in Design

It’s said that ‘What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.’ The pandemic will leave lasting effects in many areas, including design and construction, and now everyone is seeking stability beyond COVID-19. We are also reinvigorating our living architecture and green infrastructure industry in many ways. Raising the bar for a resilient future, design must evolve so we more successfully adapt to adverse events and emerge well positioned to thrive afterwards.

Nature-based solutions can be avant-garde and the well-informed design provocateur can provide moments of aesthetic transcendence while integrating green, living infrastructure.

Drawing upon work of the National Research Council and others, a shared definition of resilience is “the ability to prepare and plan for, absorb, recover from and more successfully adapt to adverse events.” The projects I’ve compiled have enhanced their resiliency by integrating green infrastructure elements into other plans to maximize co benefits and share resources across interconnected systems.

And so the Hot Top 10 List for 2020 is a bit different in that Trends are defined in terms of their resiliency application. I’ve curated a selection of truly resilient global architecture from across 6 continents to hopefully keep you inspired. As usual, it is always a difficult task to only choose a few specific projects to be showcased in each of the 10 categories representing the global greenroof and greenwall industry ~ as well as from the more general field of green infrastructure.
